Scrap Value of Containers & Cans

Estimated scrap value of common containers & cans in Australia. Sorted by value descending. Each entry links to a detailed breakdown showing the metal composition, prep tips, and where to sell.

Containers and cans are high-volume, lower-value scrap where the economics depend heavily on Australia's Container Deposit Scheme. For eligible aluminium and steel beverage cans, the 10c CDS refund (available in every state and territory) pays far more than scrap value — roughly $7 per kilogram of cans via CDS versus around $1.50 at a yard. Scrapping cans only makes sense for out-of-state, damaged, or pre-scheme containers that can't be redeemed. Larger steel and aluminium containers (drums, gas bottles, jerry cans) follow normal scrap pricing. The items below clarify when to redeem versus when to scrap.
